Thomas Snow

A special FBI agent arrived at the headquarters of the brokerage firm and asked to see Thomas Snow. An executive assistant led him to a private corner office on the tenth floor, with a glass wall and a view of the distant mountains. On this clear day the landscape was breathtakingly sharp.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Snow, my name is Robert Hall. I am a Special Agent with the FBI.”

Thomas felt his stomach stir and he rose from his chair. It had been a long time since his days of plundering clients’ accounts. Confident that the visit had nothing to do with his past, he was poised and cordial.

“What can I do for you, Mr. Hall?”

Uninvited, Robert Hall sat down and looked around him.

“We are investigating a person by the name of Brent Bushnell. He mentioned that you had been his supervisor in the past. Do you remember him?”

Thomas quickly connected some dots, and decided to think carefully before saying too much.

“Yes, I remember Brent. He worked under me for over a year, was quite capable, but he left our firm, and said he took another position.”

“Do you know where he went to work after leaving your company?”

“No, I don’t. We did not stay in contact.”

“He referred to the code name ‘Agent M’ as his employer. Do you have any idea who or what that code name stands for?”

Thomas guessed who the nameless employer was, but something told him to be careful.

“I am sorry, I’m afraid I can’t help you. Again, Brent and I lost touch.”

“Did you provide a job reference to Mr. Bushnell when he left? Did you mention his name to anyone who might have offered him a job?”

“No, I did not. Mr. Hall, as I said, The fellow resigned from our company and went on his way, and I never heard anything about his next place of work.”

“He did mention your name, and said he thought you might have put in a good word for him to his future employer.”

Thomas was visibly agitated, and he rested an arm on his desk while he leaned forward, looking directly at the man.

“I did not help Brent Bushnell find another job; as a matter of fact, he didn’t even ask me for a reference letter. His departure was quite abrupt. Again, I haven’t spoken to or heard from him since he resigned. If that’s all, I have to get back to my work.”

Special agent Robert Hall was a behavioral analyst, and he noticed the tension in the man, but thanked him and left. He could not detect if it was just the unease of having an FBI investigator in his office, or if he was holding back something.

Thomas sat at his desk as he watched the special agent make his way down the hall to the elevator. He tried to gauge the best way to caution Celeste that the Feds had Brent it their clutches and that she might be next in line. He decided to email her from the corporate server rather than his own.
